His Daughter's Faithful Companion by Ciara Knight

His Daughter's Faithful Companion

A chance for redemption
Begins with a special dog

Single dad Ryan Tanner is fiercely protective of his daughter. So when a dog at the local rescue farm saves Ellie from a life-threatening allergic reaction, Ryan is determined to adopt Max as an allergen detection dog. There’s only one problem: trainer Brooke Sanders. She thinks Max’s unpredictable behavior makes him unsafe to place with a child. Convincing Brooke to give Max a chance isn’t easy, but convincing her to give Ryan a chance might be even harder. As Ellie bonds with both Brooke and Max, Brooke can see what being part of this family might be like. But is she willing to take the risk?

  • What themes does the book explore?

"His Daughter’s Faithful Companion" explores themes of healing, trust, faith, and second chances.

At its heart, the story is about people carrying emotional wounds while trying to move forward after loss. Ryan is struggling with grief and the overwhelming fear of protecting his daughter after losing his wife bedause he wasn't quick enough to save her. Brooke has spent years guarding her heart and avoiding deep connections because trusting others has only brought pain in the past.

The story also explores the idea that healing rarely happens all at once. Sometimes healing comes through quiet moments, unexpected friendships, acts of courage, and learning to lean on others instead of carrying every burden alone.

Faith weaves gently throughout the story as the characters learn that God hasn’t abandoned them in their broken places. There’s also a strong theme of family—not just the family we’re born into, but the people and relationships that become home through love, grace, and support.

And of course, Max reminds everyone that second chances aren’t limited to humans.

  • What makes this book different from your previous work?

While my stories have always centered around faith, family, and emotional healing with a dash of special needs characters, "His Daughter’s Faithful Companion" felt especially personal because of the unique bond between the characters and Max, the dog who becomes such an important part of their journey.

The inclusion of a specially trained dog also brought a fresh dynamic to the story. Max isn’t simply a pet in the background. He actively influences the emotional growth of the characters and helps bring healing to a family struggling to move forward after loss.

I think readers will still find the warmth, faith, and heartfelt romance they expect from my books, but this story carries an added layer of emotional depth and quiet resilience that makes it stand out in a special way for me.

  • Was there a particular scene that was difficult to write?

One of the hardest scenes for me to write was actually the opening scene. It brought back memories of when my own son went into anaphylactic shock. For eighteen years, he had never had a food allergy, until suddenly he did. It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.

When little Ellie collapses in the story and her father has to jump in to save her, those emotions on the page were very real. The fear, helplessness, and desperate need to protect your child all came from a deeply personal place. Writing that scene reminded me why this story mattered so much to me and why I wanted to explore the hope and comfort these incredible dogs can bring to families facing life-threatening allergies.

  • Which character surprised you the most while writing?

The character who surprised me the most while writing His Daughter’s Faithful Companion was actually Max, the dog. I expected him to simply be part of the story, but he quickly became the heart of it. The more I wrote, the more I realized Max wasn’t just helping protect Ellie—he was helping each of the characters heal in different ways.

Brooke sees a troubled dog with a painful past, while Ryan sees hope for his daughter’s future. But Max seemed determined to prove that broken things—and broken hearts—can still have purpose. By the end of the book, he completely stole every scene he was in, and honestly, I fell in love with him right alongside the characters.

  • Did any real-life experiences influence the story?
I got a little ahead of the questions and answered this one above, but I'll add a little to it. That sense of helplessness, and never knowing if what he was about to eat had pine nuts in it sparked the idea for Max and the possibility of allergen-detection dogs helping protect children like my son, and int he story's case, Ellie. While the story itself is fictional, the emotions behind it—the fear, hope, protectiveness, and faith—came from very real place in my heart.

  3. Your post drew me in with the emotional depth behind this story and the way you wove together themes of faith, healing, and second chances, especially through Max and his impact on both Ellie and the adults who are trying so hard to protect their hearts while doing the right thing; the personal experiences you shared about your son’s allergy crisis added such authenticity to the tension in that opening scene, and it is clear how those real emotions shaped the tenderness, fear, and hope that run through the book, making this feel like a story written from a place of genuine compassion and lived understanding.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving a comment so I could find your blog. I hope you will return again soon.

  8. I think it's good when love stories develop slowly and naturally. When people have had sad experiences, it takes time to open themselves up to love again, and it's good when novels take that into account. Oh, and I like dogs 🥰 (or actually pretty much all animals)!
All the best from Austria 🤗.

  9. I already know this is going to be heartwarming. I just want to know if the dog lives before I jump into it. That's very important to me as a dog person. Lol
