A Pivotal Right: (Shaking the Tree Book 2)

Florence struggled for breath as she stared in the face of a ghost. "Jack?"

Twenty years after being forced apart Jack and Florence have been offered a second chance at love. But can they find their way back to each other through all the misunderstandings, guilt and pain?

And what of their daughter, Viola? Her plan to become a doctor is based on the belief she has inherited her gift for medicine from Emile, the man she believed was her father. How will she reconcile her future with the discovery that she is Jack's child?

A Pivotal Right is the second book in the Shaking the Tree series set in colonial New Zealand. It continues the story of Jack and Florence begun in The Moral Compass.

  • What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I'm always immersing myself into historical novels as they are such a great source of information and inspiration. The big ones for me so far have been 'Gone with the Wind' and 'The Luminaries'  which were huge reads full of enjoyment and valuable knowledge.

  • What is the first book that made you cry?

I can't remember if I'm completely honest. I must have cried when I read Charlotte's Web as a child. More recently, I'd have to say Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. The end is a real tear-jerker.

What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

Because I self-publish I've not been the victim of unscrupulous or incompetent publishers or agents, but I have heard lots of horror stories from writers who have ended up out of pocket and without the right to control how their own work is portrayed, distributed and marketed. I do believe that authors are undervalued in the industry. Everyone seems to forget that without the writing there would be no publishing industry.

  • Does writing energize or exhaust you?

This depends on how things are going on a project. If I'm on a roll and the words are flowing, the process is exciting and invigorating. If I'm stuck on something, then it's demoralising and exhausting.

Tell us a little bit about your book...

A Pivotal right is the second book in the Shaking the Tree trilogy. It begins twenty years after The Moral Compass and picks up Florence and her daughter, Viola, when they return to NZ to visit Bertram (Florence's brother). They walk into a shop and come face to face with Jack, Florence's first husband, and the man she believes to be dead. This discovery sends both Jack and Florence into a spin as they try to reconnect with each other after so much time has passed. Viola's life is also turned on its head. She has based her aspiration to become a doctor on the understanding she inherited her perchant for medicine from her late father, Emile, but when she finds out that she is actually Jack's daughter, it leads her to question everything about her life.

    1. Thank you, Sandra. I try to go and do something else for a while, like make a historical costume, when the words just aren’t flowing.

    1. Thank you, Chrys. I agree. I got a little bit of grief from some readers because my two main characters didn’t get together at the end of the Moral Compass (the first Book in the series). But I felt that was a more emotionally mature and realistic way to break the story and has made A Pivotal Right a much stronger story as the hero and heroine have grown and matured and have so much they have to work through to be together. The stakes are higher for them.

  4. This sounds like a really good and interesting read. For some reason it reminds me a bit of The Thorn Birds :)

    1. I’ve had the Thorn Birds on my shelf for years but have never read this it. The to be read pile is always too big.
