Healing the Veteran by Ciara Knight

  Healing the Veteran

A K-9 in need
could help open his closed-off heart.

Haunted by a disastrous military mission, wounded veteran Ace Gatlin vows to live alone on his farm so he can never fail anyone again. However, this doesn’t discourage his determined neighbor, physiotherapist Jolene Pearl, who shows up at his door with a troubled K-9 desperate for a home.

Jolene is sure the two injured warriors need each other, and soon, their joint efforts to rehabilitate sweet Bear chip away at the shrapnel lodged in Ace’s heart. But when a catastrophic tornado strikes Willow Oaks, more than just their budding relationship is put to the test.

Can Jolene help Ace see himself as worthy of happily-ever-after?

Do you have any writing habits?
Yes, I do! My writing routine has become one of my favorite parts of the day. I start with a cup of coffee and head up on deck to watch the sunrise over the water—it’s such a peaceful way to begin. Then I dive into writing until about 10:00 a.m. After that, I take a break for chores before joining an online writing sprint that carries me through until noon. That rhythm of solitude, routine, and community keeps me grounded and productive.

Did you face any challenges while you were writing this story?
Yes, I did. While I was writing this story, I was also in the middle of selling my home of twenty-one years, and it was overwhelming to sort through so many memories. That sadness and grief found its way onto the page, shaping the emotions of my characters in a very real way. But in the end—just like in my stories—there’s always a Happily Ever After.

Tell us about your book...
Healing the Veteran is a story very close to my heart. Years ago, I worked with veterans at the VA hospital in Miami, and their courage and struggles stayed with me. This book grew out of that experience. It follows a wounded veteran who believes his past scars make him unworthy of love, a woman with her own emotional scars after struggling with Guillain-Barré syndrome, and a dog with a troubled history of his own. Each of them carries pain, but together they discover faith, second chances, and the healing power of love. It’s a story where my heart is poured into every page, and one that reminds me—and I hope my readers—that no matter how broken we feel, there is always hope and always a path to a Happily Ever After

  1. Such a beautiful and heartfelt post! This is also very close to my heart in that my father was a WWII veteran, and he died in 1984 at the age of 64. I was just 27 years old and an only child, having lost my mother a year earlier.

I truly appreciate you sharing this. I would also like to thank you so much for your visit and kind comment on my blog, I really appreciate it!
