What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I’m a huge Shakespeare fan, and one of my favorite places is Stratford-upon-Avon, the town where he was born. The great man’s birthplace is lovely town, with some glorious buildings, interesting walks and great places to eat.
No visit to Stratford is complete without a visit to the birth house of Shakespeare. You can step inside the home where he grew up and see where he worked, played, ate and slept. Other places of interest include Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shakespeare’s New Place (his last home and the place where he died in 1616), Royal Shakespeare’s Company Theatre (where I saw a performance of The Tempest), and a trip along the river Avon.
One of the things that struck me when I visited Stratford was how much we know about Shakespeare’s life. It’s because he was so popular and famous while he was alive. He really was one of the earliest celebrities!

What is the first book that made you cry?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. It makes me cry with happiness and sadness. There are other books that can do that, but Little Women was the first. And it does it every time I re-read it. It’s a very emotional read!

What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

This has to be plagiarism, or the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as your own. Some books are copied word-for-word while others are altered just enough to make it tough to detect to infringement. For an author, this intrusion goes beyond threatening their livelihood. Writing a novel is a creative act, and having it stolen by someone else can feel like a personal violation.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

I am a cancer patient. While it’s true that the creative spark doesn’t die out when you have a life-altering condition, you do have to find ways to nurture it. It’s like being in survival mode 24/7. If you let go of that thread, there is always the fear that you will never be able to find it again. But writing is my therapy. It energizes me. Even on a bad day, I’ll make the time to write a few hundred words because I know it will make me feel better.

Tell us a little bit about your book…

Colton’s Secret Bodyguard is Book Four in the Coltons of Roaring Springs continuity.

  5. What a great interview. Wishing Jane all the best with her cancer treatments- I can imagine that going through treatments could make it hard to find time to write. This sounds like an interesting read. Thanks for sharing. :)
